Marketing Ideas – Bob Monkhouse: The Power to Shock?

January 4th, 2008 by admin

There are many things that you would expect from the late Bob Monkhouse. A smutty innuendo, a quick jibe at the expense of his wife or Mother -in – law and the like but he was not really the sort of person you would expect to leave you shocked and puzzled. Yet he has done.

Four years after his death he has come back in a very moving and powerful advert for Prostrate Cancer. Filmed when he knew he was dying, Bob Monkhouse appeared in an advert he knew he would never see aired. In it he appears looking at his own grave and asks for donations for the campaign for the disease that killed him.

It is a wonderful advert that is both moving, shocking and funny. What I like about it best is that it is very unexpected. It makes a great use of a celebrity spokesperson in a most unexpected way. It pushes the boundaries of taste, yet as the jokes are by the comedian himself, it can’t be seen as offensive.

It has a great headline and a good punchline as you would expect from a man framed for his catchphrases.

At a time when it is increasingly hard to stand out from all the advertising clutter, this one makes us stop what we are doing and smile. I hope it has men reaching into their trouser pockets.
