Lessons in Life:
Do you see life in the same way as millionaires do?

Paul McKenna is a well known stage hypnotist and NLP trainer. He has hosted his own TV shows and has worked with many famous people over the past 10 years. During his research, he has compiled a list of views and perspectives on life that he has found successful people have in common. These 7 views are far from unique, but in this month’s edition of Ideal World, I thought you might be interested in reading about them and you may want to consider how many of them you already possess.

1. Realise that you are an expert on you. Nobody knows the way you think and feel better than you do. Instead of always seeking the answers elsewhere, by asking yourself, by looking within, you will find the perfect answers to the questions you have.

2. You are not broken and do not need to be fixed. Rather than focusing on all the problem areas that you have, focus instead on what you do best and what others do best. It is always possible to improve on what we do. It is also always possible to examine what other people do, and model ourselves on their success.

3. You already have the resources you need to be a success. You already possess all the skills, or resources to acquire the skills that you need. This means that whatever situation you find yourself in, you have the capabilities to master it.

4. Whatever the task, if you break it down it can become manageable. You may have heard the joke how do you eat an elephant? One chunk at a time. No matter what your goal or desire, you have the capability to achieve it as long as you take it piece by piece. Have the end in mind – but think of the many steps it will take you to get there rather than the daunting whole, and any task becomes easier to imagine.

5. If what you are doing isn’t working – do something else. If you want to produce different results in your life, you need to step outside the comfort zone in which you are operating and do something different.

6. There is no such thing as failure. Failure is only a state of mind. If you do something that does not produce the results you want, that is not failure – it is a useful learning experience. The more ‘failures’ that you experience, the better equipped you are to make progress and succeed at your goals in life. Success is also sweeter when it takes a little longer to achieve what you want.

7. You are creating your future NOW. Are you on the right path to creating your goals at the moment right now? There is no point in living in the past and reliving past mistakes, instead live in the moment. You are either working towards your goals as you read this, or not. The successful know their goals and steadily work towards them every day.

So, how did you match up? How many of these views do you agree with and use on a daily basis? If you agree with them all, then you are no doubt well on your way to living the life you have always dreamed of.

Book of the month :
‘Go – an Airline Adventure’– Barbara Cassani

A fascinating insight into the rapid start and premature demise of British Airways’ attempt to set up a low cost airline. This account of the short lived spin off by BA to tackle the threat it faced by low cost rivals gives many interesting insights into running a business in a tough market. It’s told in a very personal style and features the views and opinions of many of GO’s personnel including flight crews, pilots and senior staff. It is also an interesting insight into low cost marketing and PR - although this is low cost by BA’s standards!

Direct Mail
Creating effective body copy
Use short sentences. You want to make your letter as easy as possible for your reader to carry on with it. Don’t make the reader work too hard.

Break up your letter with sub-headings between paragraphs. These are often just a few words such as ‘Save money today’ Breakthrough performance’ or ‘100% money-back guarantee’ which are a preview of the paragraph that is to follow.

Put yourself in the position of a customer. What is going to make them interested in your product or company? Usually it is a combination of things rather than one single thing. For example, they are only interested in low prices if they are interested in the product you are offering in the first place..

They say that a direct mail letter can’t be too long – only too boring. They also say the more you tell, the more you sell. I partially agree, but I feel that this does depend on what you’re selling. Also, it can be less cost effective in terms of printing to create 15 page letters. My suggestion is to start at one page and slowly expand your letters only if you feel they need it.

Nobody is interested in you, your company or your products. Make your letter about your customer, their problems and what you can do to solve them. Your customer – or prospect only wants to know what you can do for them.

For every ‘we’ ‘us’ or ‘I’ you use in direct mail, you should use ‘you’ or ‘your’ at least five times (see the above sentence as an example of how this works).

PR tip of the month

With Valentine’s Day coming up in February, (in case you hadn’t noticed the shops) is now a good time to let your clients know how much you appreciate them? Perhaps you can connect one of your products or services with the theme of love, or the heart or the brain?  Have customers fallen in love with your product in record numbers?  These are all ideas that could be used to good effect to promote your company on the back of Valentine’s Day.  But don’t stop at Valentine’s Day – there are plenty of well signposted days and events which can be used to publicise what you offer.
